about

Far from comprehensive or all-encompassing, this project is a collection of thoughts and emotions I've felt at certain points in my musical and personal growth that I felt could be healing to share.

I approached the project as a sort of letter to myself just picking up the instrument, just discovering jazz for the first time, and trying to figure out where I fit in that seemingly foreign world. In the past year as a college student, I have experienced so many more important conversations about the deep psychological impact gender has on experience in playing this music, and realized that this struggle for self-articulation is not unique to me. Even though the details, the stories, are often never brought to the surface, we all hold them close to us as womxn in this tradition that simply was not built for us, especially Black womxn, despite our crucial role in its foundation. I want to bring attention to this internal struggle, bring it into the light, for an audience of young womxn wrestling with whether their truth that compels them to pursue this music is “true enough”, whether they have what it takes, the imposter’s syndrome…I want them to feel that they are not alone, and be strengthened by the notion that their truth is everything, and should be protected at all costs.

Thanks to Hani'el Mastriani-Levi for producing, mixing and mastering, in addition to my peers, my teachers, my family and my friends that continue to validate these truths for me and invite me to share in their own daily. :)
